The bay

A promenade, fish tavernas and the beach of Avlaki, around a bay guarded by the island of Raftis.

Porto Rafti is the coastal face of Markopoulo: a sheltered bay with a seafront promenade, small harbours and tavernas by the water.

According to tradition, the bay takes its name from the colossal Roman statue on the island of Raftis at its mouth, which locals likened to a tailor, a raftis. Avlaki, by the Koroni peninsula at the south-eastern edge, is the organised municipal beach; the churches of St Marina on the south shore and St Spyridon at the north end mark the coast.
