North Markopoulo

Panagia Varaba

Twelfth- to thirteenth-century domed, free-cross church with wall paintings from several periods.

The story

Among the fields north of Markopoulo stands Panagia Varaba. This small Byzantine church is shaped as a free cross and crowned by an octagonal dome. Its surviving paintings belong to several periods, showing how successive generations cared for and renewed the sacred interior. Walk around the exterior to appreciate its compact proportions. The church celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin on the eighth of September.
