Markopoulo

Profitis Ilias at the Waterworks

Post-Byzantine hilltop chapel beside the waterworks, with paintings associated with the school of Georgios Markou.

The story

Above Markopoulo, the chapel of Prophet Elijah stands beside the town’s waterworks. This small, vaulted church belongs to the post-Byzantine landscape of the Mesogeia. Inside, paintings associated with the school of Georgios Markou survive with later interventions. The hill offers a chance to connect the town below with the wider countryside. Its feast is celebrated on the twentieth of July.
