The story
You are at the Papagiannakos winery, in the Pousi Kalogeri area of Markopoulo. The family story begins in 1919. That year great-grandfather Vassilis Papagiannakos filled his first barrel with local Savatiano. His son Giannis later expanded the family vineyards. In the nineteen-nineties the third generation, another Vassilis, put his faith in Savatiano and began to bottle it. The Savatiano vines here are never irrigated.
Some are up to seventy years old, and their roots can reach twenty metres down in search of water. They are pruned low, in the shape of a cup, the old Attic way. This shields the grapes from the strong winds of August. The present winery was completed in 2007. It is a bioclimatic building, designed to sit in harmony with the landscape. Fermentation and bottling happen underground, where the temperature stays steady all year. Visits and tastings are by appointment, so book ahead and taste the wine where it grows.
