The story
Welcome to the Archaeological Museum of Brauron, built in 1962 just two hundred metres from the sanctuary. Its five rooms tell the story of Artemis and of the people who trusted her. Look for the marble Relief of the Gods, which sums up the myth of how the sanctuary was founded. Nearby, on votive reliefs, whole families walk in procession, ready to offer a sacrifice. Then comes the room of the children.
Here stand many small statues of boys and girls, given by parents who asked the goddess to protect their little ones, or thanked her for it. Children offered their own toys too, knucklebones, dice and tiny vases. Women brought mirrors, jewellery and perfume flasks when they married or gave birth. Do not miss the rare wooden offerings. They survived only because the waterlogged ground kept them safe. The last room gathers finds from across Mesogaia, including the Mycenaean cemetery of Perati at Porto Rafti.
