The story
From the museum, follow the path towards the sea. You are entering the Vravrona wetland, which stretches from the edge of the ancient sanctuary down to the mouth of the Erasinos. The river carries fresh water even through the hottest summer, and where it meets the sea the water turns brackish and fills with fish. That is why the birds come. In the reedbeds, moorhens and water rails build their nests.
In spring and autumn, little bitterns and other herons stop here on their journey. On the wet meadows, look for the glossy ibis, and listen for nightingales in the thick bushes. Near the shore, gulls, terns and the kingfisher dive for fish. Keep an eye on the water. It hides the Marathon minnow, a rare little fish, along with terrapins and frogs. In a single year of counts, ornithologists recorded eighty-eight bird species here. Walk quietly, and the wetland will show you some of them.
