The land of Markopoulo Mesogaias has been settled since antiquity. At Brauron, on the eastern coast, stood one of the most important sanctuaries of Artemis in Attica, where young Athenian girls served the goddess in the rites of the Arkteia.
In the centuries that followed, the plain was farmed and planted with vines. The Frankish tower of Liada is one of the few standing traces of the medieval landscape, while the town itself took shape as the agricultural centre of the Mesogeia.
Modern Markopoulo kept both identities: a wine town on the plain and a municipality that reaches the sea at Porto Rafti and Vravrona.
